I have a Common Pleco and have heard they can grow huge! Around 20 inches! So obviously I’ll have to transfer to a bigger tank soon… but how soon? He’s around 2" (maybe 3" it’s hard to tell) at the moment… how fast will he grow?
Thanks for any feedback :)

About 1-3 inches a month, more or less, is pretty average.

pleco can grow fully in about 5 years they are very common as they usually shrink down to the size of thier tank they can reach a full length of about 16" but will normally never get there but all depends on how big the tank is..

pretty fast fish don’t live long so they need to grow fast.

I was planning on getting Two African dwarf frogs and wanted to breed them i would like to know step by step how to breed them and the supplies i will need for the tadpoles and stuff like EVERYTHING I WILL NEED very detailed would be appreicated and how big of a tabk will i need aswell?

You get a male and multiple females.

You get a tank at least 5 gallons in size.

You increase the water temperature to between 75 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

You make sure the frogs are well fed and happy.

You wait.

You notice eggs in the tank. Turn off the filter so they won’t get sucked into it.

You find little tadpoles swimming in your tank one day.

You feed the tadpoles powdered/crushed fish flakes, algae wafers, stuff like that.

You have successfully bred ADF’s!

They are pretty easy to get to breed, if you have both sexes. The hardest part of breeding them is taking care of the tadpoles.

http://flippersandfins.net/adfbreedingar
gives lots of detail on how to breed them.

.

OK… you need to do a couple of things.

- Increase the water temperature in your tank to almost 80 degrees. This one doesn’t apply if you don’t have a heater.

- Make sure your fish are well fed, but not overly so.

- Go to any pet store and ask for fish medication for a fungal infection. Follow the instructions on the medicine precisely.

- Change the water often.

All the best!

its not fungal its ich so in the pet shops they sell ich clear andquick curethese help alot. you should also buy mela fix that doesnt really help the disease but it helps not risk of disease

Ick is a parasite. You need a fungicide and a ick medicine.

Fish & mushrooms, yummmmm!

is this normal for them i just got him a couple of hours ago. hes been swimming slow and turns his tail sideways when other fish approach him. also hes just staying near the top of the tank. I have bala sharks and golden barbs in there with it. could they just be chasing him to tell them hey this is my tank or what. please help

Test your water.

Did you acclimate properly?

Some fish are just weird and swim backwards. Your fish is not one of them.

Return the fish to the store from which you bought it. It is either sick or has some kind of mental defect.

i whant to buy a 1 inch oscer fish from the pet shop can i put it in a 12 gallon fish tank i heard the rule for fish is one inch of fish per gallon so i could fish a 12 inch oscer in my tank acording to that rule but im just asking how long could i keap it in this tank and also could i fit a one inch oscer fish in a 3 gallon fish tank acording to that rule i could but id like to ask you guys please answer!!!!!!!!

The 1 inch per 1 gallon of water rule does not apply to large fish. You are not going to put a 20 inch fish in a 20 gallon tank. The rule of common sense applies there.

Oscars, and most cichlids need swimming space.Guppies just need space to breed.Bettas are found sometimes in cattle hoof holes with water. See the point I am trying to explain….?

So if an Oscar does not have enough room to swim freely, it will hinder his growth pattern.

I’ll try to be less rude than usual here,
so, no, you cannot put an oscar in your tank,
anyone who says you can is an idiot,
since the minimum for an oscar for the first year is about 55 gallon and then after that , even larger.

note: if you wish to use the one inch rule, you have to understand that one inch is equal to one or two neon tetras, and your baby oscar is the equivalent of about 30-50 neon tetras when the oscar is only one inch long. So, by the time the oscar is 3 months old, it will be the equivalent of about 100-150neons, or the same as 50 to 75 "inches" of fish, when the oscar is 2-3 inches long.

Is that understandable ?

It’s going to grow almost as big as your empty skull. A 12 gallon tank isn’t a permanent home, you’ll have to eventually upgrade to a 75 gallon minimum for 1 adult oscar.

1 inch of fish per gallon is the dumbest rule I’ve ever heard.

Pytr Pytr, dude… you know damn well he’s not gonna understand that.

You could get six one inch oscars in your 12 gallon tank. Sorry but you can’t put a 12 inch fish in there he would be jam packed. I know the rule says one inch per gallon but it really should be one inch per 2 gallons. Sorry again but don’t put the one inch oscar in the 3 gallon tank it will be too small. Sorry for the bad news!

the rule for fish is not 1 inch to 1 gallon, and besides oscars can grow larger than 14 inches, if you want your fish to be happy you will give them all the space they need, you can put 2 oscars in 125 gallons, you can put one oscar in 75 gallons.

Holy crap! ‘Ya ever hear of pausing?? Reading your question was like listening to a ditzy blonde ramble on and on and on and on…

Make sure that you have diagnosed the sickness properly and treat with the proper amounts. Melafix and Pimafix are very safe as long as you dose properly and do some research on what fish can properly take the medication. Keep it away from bettas, gourami and pencilfish as it can harm them.

I use Melafix to treat most of my tanks (including discus, crystal shrimp, loaches and catfish) and have encountered no problems so far. It contains no copper, which is a big loach, shrimp, plant and catfish killer. The only problems I have heard of is when it is overdosed or misused, so make sure to check dosages and make sure to identify the illness before you use it.

What are you treating? Some people enjoy this product, but I have never found it to be effective OR safe, for any fish.

It is just as safe for a catfish or loach as any other fish (which isn’t very safe at all in my opinion.)

Read the label!

I have a 2 guppies, a small frog, and 2 tetras in my aquarium. In our basement, we have ginormous slugs that grow to be about the size of an adult’s pinkie finger. I was wondering if I got one of the baby slugs, if it would do well in my freshwater aquarium? Thanks I appreciate your time, and please, no rude, offensive, or irrelevant answers. Thanks! :)

Is it a joke? First of all, ”normal” slug need to breathe just like us. Secondly, no, get a aquarium snail.

1. no, obviously not, ,and please pay attention in school, especially science class
2. that’s it, don’t put things in your tank that don’t belong there

No, slugs are not underwater creatures, it would surely die. Also, your fish might nip at it or think its food :O I suggest not to. Hope I helped!

no sorry, slugs need to breeth air. Great thought though. If you want something that is slimey in your tank or that sticks to your walls get a black mystery snail. Their great! :D

It’s a great idea except for one thing.
SLUGS BREATHE AIR JUST LIKE US!
It really is a good idea though, as long as you remember that key thing.
Get an aquatic snail. Thy’re really pretty. XD

The kind of slugs you’re talking about live in damp areas, but not underwater. They would drown in an aquarium.

Yea if it is wet in the tank
Hope your acquarium is succeful and nice touch for adding tetras

i dont see anything wrong with that it should work

yeah i dont see why it wouldn’t

I plan on buying 2 male Hi Fin Platys. Can I have a list of what I need to get? TY ~.~

It isn’t just supplies, there is a cycle period for new tanks as well.Research "aquarium cycle" and don’t fall for the mistake that is it just letting the aquarium run for x hours or something..it is a process of establishing a biological filter so that the aquarium can sustain fish.

Minimums for that fish:
20 gallon aquarium
heater (adjustable thermostat is best, submersible)
filter (rated for 20 gallons or more, hang on back is a decent filter for that size tank)
fish food (one that is designed for an omnivorous fish)
thermometer
test kit for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate
And any decorations or substrates you prefer. The fish benefit from some sort of decorations to help them feel secure.Gravel is a commonly used substrate, and easy to maintain.
tap water conditioner
and a gravel siphon is a good thing for water changes
A bucket is really handy for water changes too

20+ gallon tank
appropriate filter and heater
gravel or sand
water conditioner
food
ammonia, nitrate. nitrite, and PH testing kits
live plants
plastic or silk plants (optional)
caves, driftwood, other decorations (optional)

you’ll need 4+ platies as they are schooling fish. you may also want to look into snails and/or shrimps to help clean the tank. make sure you cycle your tank or get some aquarium bacteria from a pet store. the maximum number of platies you could put in this tank is 6 or 7 but i wouldn’t want to go above 6 so 5 would be good.

A 10g tank with the filter and hood the kits come with.Add a heater (keep at 64 to 77 degrees fahrenheit) and some gravel. If you don’t have well water, get water conditioner.I recommend live plants like a java fern.

Doing this, you’ll be at 58% stocking level and need to change 10% of your water a week.

Later, after your tank cycles, you can add 6 more Highfin platys OR 10 neon tetras. If you add platys, aqadvisor recommends a 1:2 ratio of male to female.

EDITED TO ADD:No source I researched said 2 platys need 20 gallons or more.Every site I read said platys need 10 gallons (some even said 5).

You should get what you can afford and what will fit nicely in your space. Two platys are going to work anywhere. The fish are in your house for your enjoyment, and if you want a 20 gallon tank with 2 fish in it, power to you.Personally, I think that would look stupid.

MATT:Cite your source, like I did.Cite the source that says a 64 degree tank or a 77 degree tank will kill platys.Cite your source that says 20 gallons is required (a reputable source, not Y!A).Maybe you have one, maybe not.Aqadvisor is mine, but I’d be glad to read yours

you will need at least a 15 gallon tank and they love tropical fish flakes and bloodworms andthey should be kept in groups of 4-5they will breed to if you have mix genders you will enjoy them and will love them they can be kept with guppies and mollies toand might have to upgrade tank to a 20 gallon if you breed them

20 gallon tank, 15 pounds of gravel, tropical fish food, a filter, a heater, plants, and water conditioner. And a net if you need one of those too.
@Chelsey
He should NOT keep his water at 64 degrees…. that is cold water and will kill his fish..

Get tetra pelats and you need 20g gravell a rock a plant a log a vacume bio support prime That’s it sweetie but if you want to get more then 2 fish i recamend 38g or 40g

Google the specific fish and the info on them it should help,

Google

I just got a new beta fish, male. He hasn’t eaten all day and I would like to know if this means he’s sick, or dying.

that always usually happens to the bettas when there new they are to distracted with the new tank so thats normal by tommorow he should star eating

It means it’s either been overfed before, or it just needs time to settle down because you just got it. My sister’s new beta didn’t eat for two days after she got him, but on the other hand my beta ate straight away. It all depends on the fish. It’s more likely for your fish to eat if it’s in a good sized tank with a filter.

it means you just got it and it’s in shock
otherwise it means it’s overfed by a lot.

If they are not eating for days then it is with some problem in stomach or some disease.

your betta is fine. feed him every three days. the biggest reason for tropical fish death is overfeeding
